This painting tells the story of two brothers sent by their father to find a special kangaroo. They hunted many times, always bringing back cooked meat, but each time their father said, "No, this is not the one."

The brothers followed old tracks across the bush, waited silently under trees, and trusted their knowledge. At last, they found a large kangaroo lying in the shade. The older brother speared it, and they cooked the meat and carried it home. But without knowing, a piece of the kangaroo’s body fell behind them.

That night, they saw a fire burning in the distance. It was moving toward them. Frightened, they ran through the night, over hills and into creeks, until they reached their father.

He felt the paw and said, "Yes. This is the one I've been waiting for." But the fire was still coming. The brothers knew it was not an ordinary fire—it had followed them from the place where the meat was dropped.

They were afraid. They said, "What shall we do? If we turn into trees, the fire will burn us."

The older brother said, "We must turn into water snakes. The fire cannot follow us into the water."

And so they changed, slipping into the cool creek, becoming part of the land and the story.

This story speaks of duty, understanding the signs of the land, and the power of transformation when spirit and country are respected.
