Ngaanyatjarra Stories from The Western Desert of Central Australia
Between 2012 & 2018 Elizabeth Marrkilyi Ellis, Jennifer Green & Inge Kral documented endangered Western Desert verbal arts in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands communities in Western Australia. They filmed the traditional practice of tjinytjatjunku tjuma (telling sand stories) and recorded younger storytellers' adaptations of this drawing practice to IPads. In this book images from these IPad stories accompany the bilingual text in Ngaanyatjarra & English. The sixteen stories burst with colour and originality, blending tradition and innovation while providing a unique window into the storytelling arts of an ancient culture.
