Shire Recognised for Best Practice Financial Reporting

The Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku has been recognised as one of the top 20 local governments in Western Australia for best practice in financial reporting and controls.

The recognition was included in the Local Government 2025 – Financial Audit Results report, which was tabled to Parliament last week. The report highlights councils that demonstrated strong performance across a number of financial management and governance measures.

The Shire’s performance was assessed against several key criteria, including:

  • Timely preparation of a CEO‑certified financial report
  • High quality financial reporting, with minimal errors identified
  • Strong working papers supporting the financial report
  • Effective resolution of accounting matters
  • Availability of key staff during the audit process
  • A low number and limited significance of management letter findings

Being acknowledged for best practice is a significant achievement for the Shire, particularly as a remote local government operating with limited resources. The recognition places the Shire alongside much larger and metropolitan councils with far greater capacity.

Our Shire President, Damian McLean, CEO, David Mosel, and Council acknowledged the efforts of staff and leadership in maintaining strong financial controls and governance systems, despite the challenges that come with delivering services across a vast and remote region.

“This recognition reflects the dedication and professionalism of our staff in managing public funds and maintaining strong governance for our community. Good financial management underpins everything we do, from service delivery to long‑term planning,” said David Mosel, CEO.

The Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku remains committed to transparency, accountability and sound financial management, ensuring community resources are managed responsibly and in the best interests of current and future generations.
