The Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku’s Sport and Recreation Team in conjunction with the Western Australian Police (WAPOL) Cadet Deployment Program successfully delivered a Youth Summer Holiday Program to the community in Warburton during the summer school break.

The program, which was supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries through their Community Place Based Grant, provided structured nutrition, sport and recreation activities for youth in line with the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku’s Sport and Recreation Plan strategic objectives.  The plan aims to increase positive community engagement, encourage physical participation, promote mental wellbeing, and provide opportunities for community youth while improving social outcomes. The successful delivery of this program has been greatly assisted by a $5000.00 plus GST contribution from the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission (GEDC) in support of the Youth Summer Holiday Program for the purchase of nutrition and hydration supplies.

Specific benefits of the program for local youth included:

  • Improved social interaction with peers, WAPOL staff and community members
  • Providing a routine of attendance aligned with the school term
  • Encouraging healthy eating through delivery of nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Promoting physical participation with sports such as softball, football, soccer, basketball, jumping castle
  • Discos and movie nights to encourage positive social interaction
  • Participation in craft and art activities to encourage connection to culture

Shire President Damian McLean advised, “the program’s success with additional attendees delivered a noticeable reduction in youth antisocial behaviour within the community during the summer holiday period”.

“The Shire would like to thank the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission and WAPOL Cadet Deployment Program for their support and assistance to enable the successful delivery of the program,” said Mr. McLean.
